Mixed Media Portraits with Pam Carriker is now available on amazon for pre order and will be releases in March of 2015.

Book Description:

Set your portraits apart from the rest!

Portraits can be an intimidating subject. But not with Art At the Speed of Life author and workshop instructor Pam Carriker as your teacher. She helps you take on faces one quick sketch at a time for faster, easier, more enjoyable drawing and painting. Not your average book on drawing the face, Mixed Media Portraits With Pam Carriker shows easy ways to draw more realistic faces in your own signature style. The goal is not an immaculate finished portrait, but a continually growing collection of personal, expressive sketches that you can use and reuse in your mixed-media work.

Inside you’ll find:

An easy-to-learn face-mapping technique that allows you to draw faces from your imagination, without a model or photo in front of you
Mini-demonstrations breaking down each facial feature
Simple color combinations for mixing both realistic and out-of-the-ordinary skin tones
15 step-by-step projects featuring original ways to use your portraits as starting points for mixed-media masterpieces
Tons of expert tips, from selecting the right pencil for the job to creating self-portraits, working with reference photos and using transfer techniques
In the true spirit of mixed media, this book is all about combining, layering and experimenting in your pursuit of portrait nirvana. It will get you out of your comfort zone and into the habit of making faces that are truly and uniquely your own.

This book was a labor of love. I’ve spent the last few days going over the final author review and I’m so thankful to North Light for allowing me to create the book I envisioned.

Last Call!!!

Registration Ends This Thursday for A Cut Above!!! Don’t delay in signing up for the class(es) of your choice because once registration closes (June 20th) the opportunity ends. I’m offering an optional DVD of both of these workshops that can only be purchased inside of the classroom at a nominal fee. This allows for those who may not have the time to do the class while it’s live, to do it at their own pace or for those who want to have unending access to the videos to revisit the workshop whenever they like.

The neat thing about the Artful Gathering Online Art Retreat is that you can take as many classes at a time as you like-just like a live retreat! There are many wonderful instructors to choose from and a wide variety of techniques to learn.

I hope you’ll consider joining me for one or both of the only online classes I’m offering this year!!

Back to School

Since school’s started back up I’m afraid I’ve woefully neglected my blog. All those projects that kept getting put off this summer caught up with me as I’m sure many of you can relate to! I felt like summer was over much too quickly and was even a bit down about it but I finally surrendered to the soon coming of Fall and have been spending hours each day in my studio.

 ‘I Surrender’ 16 x20 canvas

I’ve been working like a mad woman since day one of back to school. Some things I can’t share yet, but I’m thrilled with the progress and will hopefully be able to show them to you soon.

‘Scarlet’s Letter’ 16 x20 wood panel

I have been working on finishing up many WIP’s in the midst of my projects. I like to do a little ‘Spring Cleaning’ in the Fall, so I gathered up several pieces that had been started but not finished and set about getting them done. I’m very excited to be vending at Art Is You in Stamford the first week in October and along with products I’ll be bringing some original artwork.

‘In Remembrance’ 5 x 7 paper

Like many of you, life is all about making decisions on what you can and can’t do, so selling artwork has been on the back burner for some time. My Etsy shop has dust bunnies in it and I’m not sure if/when I’ll ever focus on that venue, but selling some artwork at the art retreats this next year is something I’m going to take on.

‘Facing Forward’ 5 x 7 paper

So with the start of school  I’m in a ‘New Year’ kind of mood, finishing things up, starting new things, planning, executing those plans and venturing out a bit more. I hope you are doing the same and looking forward to cooler weather and more studio time~
