CREATE June 2012

May 30-June 3rd

Chip Off the Old Block (3-Hour) Date: Thursday, May 31
Time: 6:00pm-9:00pm
Technique: Printmaking & Surface Design
Instructor: Pam Carriker
Price: $85.00
Materials Fee: $10.00

Carving my own lino blocks is something I love to do. It has a rhythmic, soothing quality to it that I find very relaxing and offers a nice departure from painting. By turning your own artwork into black and white, positive/negative images, you can create one-of-a-kind print blocks that can be used in future artwork. We will be carving on grey lino blocks (none of that pink rubbery stuff) and creating some detailed blocks that we will print from at the end of class. I’ll show you how to mix your own print paste using Matisse Print Paste medium, which allows you to customize your colors. This class ties in nicely with my Take 6 Techniques for Journaling class, so if you do both, bring these carved blocks with you!

Students Should Bring: Speedball Linoleum Cutter, has 5 blades in the handle. Blade MUST be new/sharp! http://www.dickblick.com/products/speedball-linoleum-cutters/, Palette Bench hook/inking plate (this is optional but recommended for safety and ease of carving) http://www.dickblick.com/products/speedball-bench-hookinking-plate/, Palette knife, Brayer, Black and white copy (printed off your computer) of 4×6 image to carve, can be from your own artwork but keep it simple, bold lines work well (can t decide what to use? I will bring some designs as well), Bone folder, Graphite pencil

Sketching Without Pencils (3-Hour)

Date: Sunday, June 3
Time: 9:00am-12noon
Technique: Printmaking & Surface Design
Instructor: Pam Carriker
Price: $85.00
Materials Fee: $15.00

I’ve been having a lot of fun working on techniques using my line of liquid graphite, Sketching Ink from Derivan, and I want to share them with you! With this new formula, it is possible to stamp a sketch using my Sketch Stamps and with some tools you probably already have. I will show you ways you can manipulate the stamped sketch to create one-of-a-kind drawings in your journal. We will explore both the permanent and rewettable formulas in a variety of ways and you will each go home with your very own bottle of Pam Carriker Sketching Ink!

Students Should Bring: Additional rubber stamps if desired (I will bring my own designs to use in class), Palette, Brayer, Water container, bone folder

Take 6 Techniques for Journaling (6-Hour)

Date: Saturday, June 2
Time: 9:00am-4:00pm
Technique: Bookmaking & Art Journaling
Instructor: Pam Carriker
Price: $149.00
Materials Fee: $15.00

Think you don’t have time to keep an art journal? In this workshop we will work six journal pages from start to finish! Starting with that often intimidating blank page, we will work fast and create fabulous backgrounds for six pages that don’t even require a paint brush. Then we will use six different techniques to add interesting focal points to each page. The journal pages will morph into individual, unique pages, personal to you. Layers of color, texture, text, and more will take your journal pages to a whole new level. We will experiment with Thermofax screens, lino-cut prints, image transfers, stencils, water soluble media, and collage, using my new mixed media adhesive that allows you to watercolor right over the top of it.

Students Should Bring: water container, brushes, palette, scissors, whatever journaling pens you like, bone folder, some personal collage material (enough for one page, can be whatever you want)

From this base we will build three fabulous portraits on three different substrates, using paints, additional mediums, and even a palette knife for a brush! We will have fun with a variety of techniques and media, creating these nontraditional painted portraits.
