Pam Carriker

Student Level:
Intermediate, some painting and drawing skills helpful
Type of Workshop: Process and Project

Ever feel like you have all the pieces needed to create a portrait, but you just can’t quite get them all to fit together? Creating portraits can be a puzzling challenge, but like any puzzle it can be solved by patiently working through until the last piece is in place. I will share with you how the pieces of the face fit together as we work layer after layer, journal style on an 8 ½ x 11 puzzle board to create a meaningful portrait all about what makes you, well-you!

I will teach you the techniques I use for turning sketches into paintings, shading, highlighting, how to incorporate journaling into your work, face mapping, and useful background techniques using a variety of media. When we finish our puzzle portraits they can be disassembled to fit into the hand drawstring muslin bag provided.

Each student will complete an 8 ½ x 11 puzzle portrait

Kit fee

of $15 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
    • 8 1/2 x 11 Puzzle Faber Castel Pitt Artist Pen set of 4
    • Graphite pencil
    • Kneaded eraser
    • all in a drawstring muslin bag

Supplies Provided

      by Instructor:
  • Matisse paints and mediums
  • Assorted stamps to use
  • Stencils and other texture tools
  • Inks
  • Pens
  • Charcoal

Students should bring:

  • Paint brushes
  • Water container
  • 8 x 10 copy of a photo of your face-note: this only needs to be a computer print-out in black and white on regular computer paper (this will only be used for reference so no need to worry about ink quality etc)
  • List of 12 words that describe you and a short sentence about each word. This project is a journaling exercise, and it will help the class to move more quickly and lessen your stress if you have some idea of what words/text you’d like to incorporate into your portrait beforehand.

A Cut Above Friday 9:00 – 4:30 $145

Student Level:
Intermediate, some lino cut carving experience is helpful
Type of Workshop: Process and Project

One of my favorite pastimes is carving linoleum blocks. I find it methodically stress relieving and it helps me to see my art in a new way. By carving our own lino blocks with images created from previous artwork, we are able to further explore our creativity with new mediums. We will learn how to turn our own work into positive/negative images, transfer them to linoleum and then create detailed carvings from them.

During the second half of the class we will print with our new carvings using custom print paste we will make ourselves, and then we will make several journal pages from the printed images. If you are game we can even stamp each other’s images into our journals to have fun playing with even more art!

Each student will take away a finished lino cut block and several finished mixed media journal pages.

Kit Fee of $20 payable to Instructor at class time includes:

  • Speedball carving tool with multiple blades
  • 4×5 lino carving block
  • Strathmore 5 ½ x 8 Visual Journal
  • all in a drawstring muslin bag
