Share Art Through Teaching

This week registration will open for my new 2010 online workshop!

Journal 365
with Pam Carriker

A year-long event in visual journaling, this workshop is the perfect way to make art an every day occurrence. Not just a class but a way of living creatively all year long! Every month a new class will be posted with techniques and journal prompts to use for that month. We’ll share, encourage, and inspire each other as we make our own journals along the way, adding a signature of favorite paper to them each month. Watching our journals grow, sharing our passion for journaling with each other, through class participation together we’ll explore different types of journaling as we grow into our individual styles, revealing the true artist that lies within each of us. Every lesson will be complete, so the class can be joined at the beginning of any month, with the participant picking up at that point and adding the missing lessons on at the end. Revolving lessons, like a Ferris Wheel; it doesn’t matter when you get on, you’ll still get the full ride! All 365 days.

Class fee $120/12 lessons
Begins April 1st 2010

Pam Pastel’s

Ooops, was that a typo? Not really, this lovely medium is called Pan Pastel’s. I just love them so much I call them Pam’s Pastel’s:-) They are lovely, ultra soft, artist pastels that come in little cakes or pans. I often use them with other mediums, for a soft touch to

backgrounds or for quick coloring in my journal.

What I had not done before is to create a portrait using only the pastel’s, no paint. It gives a totally different feel to the work. Very soft looking, slightly out of focus. Lovely. And so fast you won’t believe it! Perfect for journal work. So this morning I decided to do a little video tutorial for you! It took a total of 23 minutes from start to finish for this portrait, and that includes fiddling with the camera, so you can see it is fast. There is no dry time, no mess, and quick coverage.

This is the portrait at the end of the video

This is the finished portrait. I used a little charcoal and some water soluble crayon on the background, the face is done only with the pastels and graphite pencil.

In the Pursuit of Portraits

I just got a message that the invites for Pursuing Portraits have gone out, so let the fun begin! It’s not too late to sign up, you can join as anytime and the class is open ended.

I was playing with this portrait over the weekend and just listed it in my etsy shop. I have enjoyed working on the 180lb hot press Fabriano watercolor paper. I had some matts cut to size to fit these pieces.

Getting back into the swing of things after a weekend full of Fourth of July fun. Hope you all had a wonderful time as well!

If you are looking for something and don’t find it there, don’t hesitate to ask. Remember, the classes are open ended, so you can fit them in to your schedule:-)
Now to finish getting ready for the Southwest Missouri Art Teachers workshop tomorrow…

Sneak Peek at Pursuing Portraits

Here is a sneak peek video from my Pursuing Portraits workshop. A little collection of some of my journal portraits marking my own growth. I will provide some basic sketching exercises for creating portraits to start you on the journey to discovering your own unique style of portrait. Here are some little glimpses of my ‘Generic Face’. I will share my painting techniques, and favorite tools.

Here is a little sketch I did last night. I want to combine the pears with a portrait. Today I will start on the this as my next work.
