A Productive Weekend!

I’m having a fairly productive weekend! In between cleaning out closets, I was able to finish and list this new work titled, ‘Be Set Free’. That’s what cleaning out clutter feels like to me~it sets me free! Sometimes I am just in the mood to purge and I go at it like gangbusters getting things cleaned out and organized. Now in the midst of this cleaning frenzy, my house looks like a hurricane came through (thoughts and prayers to those going through ‘real’ hurricanes:-). But, there is a method to my madness, and an upcoming neighborhood garage sale to spur me on.

Don’t forget about the Mind Wide Open voting that begins tomorrow. I have seen a couple of the other entries, and they are gorgeous! You can scroll down to see mine, I’ll keep my fingers crossedxxx.

Hope you are all enjoying your weekend, productive or not!

Mind Wide Open September Challenge

Here is my piece for the September Mind Wide Open Challenge. If you have not been over to check out this site, it is just awesome! The voting will begin on the 7th and I can promise you mind boggling artwork. I love participating in this challenge, because it is that, a challenge!
I used the lovely image that Gail provided and collaged some additional elements to pull it into my current Poe theme. I used an 8×10 canvas that has been turned over using inspiration from my friend Glenda of Twocooltexans. I have covered the whole thing with molding paste and pressed stamps into it to give it texture and a design. It looks like tooled leather. Layers of paint and inks were applied and then I added some extra elements, mica, wire, key, hinges and nails. The back is completely done, making it perfect for displaying on an easel. Our word prompt is ‘Boo’, and though I did not use the actual word on my piece, I can think of nothing as spooky as some of Poe’s writings. So my ‘Boo’ is implied here, just listen to the beat of your Tell-Tale heart. These words are from Poe’s work, Eleonora and read, “She whom I loved in youth and of whom I now pen calmly and distinctly these remembrances. The loveliness of Eleonora was that of the Seraphim. Hand in hand about this valley, for fifteen years, roamed I with Eleonra before love entered within our hearts. Eleonora was the name of my cousin.” I have titled it simply, ‘Eleonora’.

Mind Wide Open August Challenge Pictures

Here are some additional pictures of my entry. I have had this wooden shrine (5 1/2x 9x 2) for ages. It jumped right out at me when I saw the image and word prompt for this challenge. Since the word prompt is ‘secret’, I searched for a quote that would tie it into the bird theme I wanted to use. I found the perfect words, ‘When you have found a birds nest, you have found him out. You have found the very center of his life and his greatest secret.’ I found this quote after I had completed the piece, which sad to say is often the case for me. It seems a backward way to go at it, but it always seems to work out well for me-lol! It was fun using some of my paint techniques on something other than canvas. I also used mica to highlight a couple of areas, including the womans face. I also added a sweet little birds nest with some feathers and fibers, an old door pull with a face peeking out, some lovely little eggs with bits of hardware attached and some little scraps of cloth to hang them by that are suspended from little hooks. It is hard to capture the depth of the piece. Layers of papers and paints, and stamped/stenciled images, have been worked into the background. I hope you will all check out Mind Wide Open when the voting begins, Friday the 8th. From the amount of eye candy that was there last month, it is sure to be a treat!

Mind Wide Open August Challenge

Boy, is it just me, or is summer just speeding up? I feel like everything is moving faster and faster, racing to the end of our lazy summer days. I almost didn’t get to take part in the Mind Wide Open challenge because of travel plans. But fortunately they got pushed back a bit and I created a little shrine that pays homage to things that I love. You will have to go to MWO to download the image and check out the guidelines. Gail has posted a beautiful image and the word prompt is ‘Secret’. I will post a picture of the back of my piece for now, I was able to scan that it came out pretty good. The image on the back is curtesy of the lovely Dawn Edmondson, who graciously posted it on her blog. The pictures that I took of the front and inside are a bit washed out, so maybe I can try to get some in natural lighting tomorrow. Then I reeeeally have to get packing, for we are off to beautiful Washington state for a family reunion! I may be 15 years past my 29th birthday, but I can sleeping bag race down Mom and Dad’s staircase with the best of them! We are a loud and crazy group when we all get together, and I can’t wait! Enjoy what’s left of summer, and try to make room for a few more of those lazy days.

Mind Wide Open Voting Is Going On Now

Where does time fly? I just had a comment about the Minds Wide Open Contest and realized voting is going on right now! So if you would like to take a peek at some totally lovely artwork, click on the title above and vote for your favorite. My piece is titled ‘Remember Me’ and is for sale on etsy, http://www.thebagladysart.etsy.com/ . I used 140lb watercolor paper, coated with gesso on both sides for a nice heavy, feel and to ensure it lays flat. I have collaged papers, layered with Golden acrylics, stamps, stencils and charcoal, to achieve a nice depth to the piece. A snippet from a vintage postcard (provided by Dawn Edmondson on her blog the feathered nest) some vintage stamps, a sweet little birds nest and angelic butterfly wings, help us to remember days gone by and a not forgotten era. This piece measures 12×12″ with a 1″ white

border around the painted area, making it suitable for framing. I hope you all will take a moment to check out Gail Schmidts contest and vote.
They beauty represented there will astound you!
