Behind the Mask

What’s behind your mask? What face do you put on every day to face the world? My mask is sunshine, positive thoughts and stopping to smell the flowers. Behind that I have days when I’m  plagued by doubt. The way that I get through that is by working hard. I try to focus on the task at hand, the project that needs to be done that day. One step in a forward direction.

This next lesson in Journal 365 we will explore our masks and create journal pages using one of my favorite techniques, ‘Shades of Grey’  journaling and then taking it further to add color with a fun medium. New members are welcome at anytime, so if you want to take your journaling to new and exciting directions, come and join us! We work with a different and complete journaling method/technique each month and spend time exploring it as we make as many pages as we want. Registration for this class will close at the end of the year, but all materials will stay up for attendees for 1 year after registration closes giving ample time for working through the lessons.

  1. This reminds me of a poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar:
    WE WERE THE MASK
    We wear the mask that grins and lies,
    It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,–
    This debt we pay to human guile;
    With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
    And mouth with myriad subtleties.

    Why should the world be overwise,
    In counting all our tears and sighs?
    Nay, let them only see us, while
    We wear the mask.

    We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
    To thee from tortured souls arise.
    We sing, but oh the clay is vile
    Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
    But let the world dream otherwise,
    We wear the mask!
